Srinagar, May 11 (KNO): Police on Monday said seven alleged drug peddlers were arrested in separate operations in Sopore, Anantnag and Pulwama districts across Kashmir, while contraband substances including charas, codeine phosphate and psychotropic tablets were recovered from their possession.
The action, according to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) was carried out as part of the ongoing “Nasha Mukt Jammu and Kashmir Abhiyaan”
A police spokesman in a statement said that in Sopore two persons were arrested during naka checking at Janwara crossing after they allegedly tried to flee from the spot. Alprazolam tablets were recovered from their possession.
The accused were identified as Faisel Majeed Mir of Janwara and Naseer Ahmad Lone of Hathlangoo, police said.
In another operation in Sopore, police intercepted two more persons at Malpora crossing and recovered psychotropic substances from them, the statement said.
Police also arrested one person identified as Umar Javaid Tugoo of Noorbagh Sopore from Shalimar Colony and recovered codeine phosphate from his possession, it added.
ANANTNAG
In Anantnag district, police said a man identified as Jahangir Ahmad Khan of Hallan Nowbugh was arrested during patrolling at Sirgan-Hallan crossing and around 1.442 kilograms of contraband substance in crushed form was seized from him.
PULWAMA
In Pulwama, police said a motorcycle rider was intercepted near Block Office Lassipora and around 204 grams of charas-like substance was recovered from his possession.
Cases under relevant sections of the NDPS Act have been registered at the respective police stations and investigations have been initiated, police said.
Meanwhile, police in several districts including Budgam, Baramulla, Awantipora and Ganderbal organised anti-drug awareness programmes, rallies and village-level meetings under the campaign to sensitise students and the public about the harmful effects of drug abuse.
In Handwara, police attached property worth around Rs 25 lakh belonging to an accused in an NDPS case and demolished structures allegedly linked to narcotics-related activities at Langate, the statement said.
Police in Anantnag said that during the first month of the anti-drug campaign, 120 FIRs were registered under the NDPS Act, 118 alleged drug peddlers were arrested and more than 300 kilograms of contraband substances were seized across the district.
Properties worth around Rs 13.5 crore linked to narcotics proceeds were either attached or demolished during the period, police said—(KNO)
